Disability aids and equipment
There is a wide variety of aids and equipment that can make life easier for people with a disability or health condition, or those who are just finding it more difficult to get around.
There are a number of mobility aids shops in Swansea where you can purchase anything from a mobility scooter or a stair lift, to easy-grip cutlery and velcro-fastening slippers. The advantage of buying locally is that you can try things out for yourself, and perhaps get advice from experienced staff.
If getting to the shops is difficult, there are many online websites which sell aids and equipment.
Short term support
If you are receiving reablement support from Social Services, our community Occupational Therapists may visit your home to look at ways to help you be more independent, and may provide or recommend equipment to help with this.
Sometimes equipment is only needed for a short period, while someone recovers from an illness or accident.
The British Red Cross is able to provide certain mobility equipment on short-term loan (6-12 weeks). They also sell a range of equipment.
Sight or hearing loss
Social Services Sensory Services Team can provide advice on specialist equipment to assist people with sight or hearing loss. They may also be able to arrange for you to visit Swansea Vale Resource Centre where people with sensory loss can trial certain equipment for suitability before purchasing from providers.
