Completed active travel routes

These new or improved routes have been completed and are open for everyone to enjoy.

Pontarddulais link

This scheme was delivered in the 2022/23 financial year, and provides an off-road, traffic-free shared use path measuring 2.4km in length. This section continues from the current active travel route from Gorseinon which ends at Station Road, Grovesend, and continues provision northwards to the start of residential properties on Pentre Road at the entrance to Pontarddulais. Local heritage information, seating, and accessible picnic tables are included along the route.

Clasemont Road

This 900m section of off-road shared use path between the A48 link with the junction of Long View Road (DVLA), has resulted in the construction of a further missing section of the Swansea northern strategic route. The route provides dedicated off-road cycle provision to the DVLA, a major employment centre in the north of Swansea. The delivery of a route on Clasemont Road was also of significant importance in ensuring that a future proposed route between Clasemont Road and Morriston Hospital can be taken forward, resulting in wider connectivity to the many large towns and employment sites to the east, and access to the city centre.

Gowerton to Kingsbridge

The delivery of the Kingsbridge cycle link has provided a 1.4km off-road connection between Gowerton and Kingsbridge for the communities of Kingsbridge, Gorseinon and Grovesend. Because of this link, a substantial population of Swansea is now connected to the benefits of the existing National Cycle Network Route 4.

Dyfatty interchange

The construction of a new shared use path adjacent to Dyfatty Street, west of Dyfatty junction has successfully linked active travel routes to the north with the city centre and links with the recently completed Orchard Street shared use path.

Morriston south link

These route enhancements have improved the connectivity for the community of Morriston. Improved local links provide an off-road means of accessing the east bank of the River Tawe. The total length of improved links (1.8 km) has undergone widening to meet active travel standards.

Note: the section in the middle of the route (marked in black on the map) will be delivered in 2022-23.

Swansea Canal

This project focused on improving the existing canal path route adjacent to Swansea Canal in the Clydach area. These improvements have provided a new off-road, shared use path which has greatly enhanced the infrastructure on the network. Improvements include the widening and resurfacing of the path, providing a surface suitable for active travel whilst retaining the towpath character.

Mayals Road link

This link delivers a route measuring 1.6 km which provides connectivity and access for those living in Mayals and West Cross. The route which has created infrastructure for cycling along the distributor link will facilitate a wider strategic route for south Gower in the coming years. The enhancement will take the form of an on-road hybrid cycle track, segregated from both vehicles and pedestrians.

Olchfa link

This 2.5km link provides a large area of Killay with off-road access to a multitude of destinations by linking onto the National Cycle Network Route 4. The shared use path provides an alternative route for pedestrians and cyclists, taking them away from the congested Gower corridor. It is also utilised as an alternative walking route to school for pupils attending the Olchfa Comprehensive School.

Sketty Park links

This project has seen the construction of shared use paths equalling 2km adjacent to Sketty Park Road, Sketty Park Drive and Park Way. This link provides enhanced connectivity into the active travel networks serving the city.

St Helens link

At 0.59km, this small section of shared use path provides a key link from the existing active travel route along the foreshore (National Cycle Network Route 4) to the Guildhall, a major employment centre and the Crown Court.

The Ravine, Townhill

This 1.46km route which was delivered in 2021/22, provides an important route, connecting the community of Townhill to Carmarthen Road, which serves as an arterial route into the city centre. A major proportion of this route provides access to the communities at the highest point of Townhill, providing good quality walking and cycling infrastructure. Switchbacks created through the middle section of the route alleviates the steep incline which provides an accessible route for both pedestrians and cyclists.

Townhill Road

This 1.2km route provides an important link between 'The Ravine' and Broadway Interchange, enabling active travel journeys through the centre of Townhill. This connecting link caters for both north and southbound journeys as well as providing improved access and active travel choices for those travelling to the local primary school, Townhill Community School, and local amenities.

Craig Cefn Parc

The construction of a 1.4km shared use path provides important local connections to the nearby communities of Clydach, Pontardawe and Morriston. This link further develops the connectivity of northeast Swansea and provides a recreational route with a surface suitable for active travel.

Jersey Road link

This link along Jersey Road connects existing walking and cycling routes to Trallwn in the east and Swansea Enterprise Zone to the west. The construction of a new shared use path along the western side of Jersey Road provides local access to employment, education, shops, services and amenities, and wider strategic connectivity to the existing traffic-free network.
