Swansea's Welcome Group

Artworks created by Swansea's Welcome Group have gone on show in the city centre.

The Welcome Group is a regular creative workshop run by Swansea Council's Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, working with local artists and volunteers to bring people together through art.

Members of the Welcome Group painted the portraits of friends, acquaintances and relatives, which you can see brightening up the hoardings surrounding the £135m Copr Bay project.

In normal times, the group meets regularly at the gallery and participate in a range of workshops and activities, designed for refugees and people seeking asylum in the city, but open to anyone.

Since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, participants and artists have been meeting online and via social media, but the team from the Glynn Vivian are looking forward to meeting at the gallery again when it is safe to do so.

The Welcome Group is managed by the gallery's learning and participation officer, Daniel McCabe, and is supported by a grant from the Arts Council of Wales, and the Friends of the Glynn Vivian. Working with Daniel and the gallery's team of volunteers to deliver group activities is associate artist Mary Hayman.

"Art can change your life and this group helps change lives for the better. Having this work shown publicly is further recognition that our members are valued citizens of Swansea. We can't wait to welcome the group back into the gallery when we can, and we hope that the public who see these amazing paintings will enjoy them." - Mary Hayman
