XL Bully dogs: guidance for Swansea Council tenants

Do you own a XL Bully? The XL Bully breed type has been added to the list of dogs banned under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991.

From 31 December 2023, breeding, selling, exchanging, advertising, rehoming, gifting, abandoning and allowing an XL Bully dog to stray will be illegal, and these dogs must be muzzled and on a lead in public (this includes internal and external communal areas if you live in a block of flats).

From 1 February 2024 it will be a criminal offence to own an XL Bully in England and Wales unless the owner has a Certificate of Exemption.

Further information and how to apply for a Certificate of Exemption

It is a condition of the Certificate of Exemption to obtain landlord's consent if you are a contract-holder (tenant). It is therefore important that you contact your local area housing office if you wish to keep your XL Bully and request permission.
