Right to Buy

To help tackle the shortage of affordable housing in the City, the Council applied to the Welsh Government for a suspension of the Right to Buy scheme.

As part of the application process, all local RSLs, Legal Firms, Estate Agents and organisations such as Shelter Cymru and the Swansea Bay Regional Equality Council were also consulted, their views collated and incorporated in the application.

The application was accepted by the Welsh Government on Dec 1st 2014 and formally approved in April 2015.

The suspension commenced Dec 1st 2014; therefore any applications for the Right to Buy received after that date can now be considered null and void.

The suspension will run for an initial 5 years and the Council will decide whether to apply to extend the suspension period nearer the end of that time.
