Lower Swansea Valley regeneration
The lower Swansea Valley, historically a powerhouse of Victorian industrialism fuelled by its copper industry, is poised for a renaissance.
The 'Vivian Legacy' scheme, a £20 million initiative funded by the UK government's Levelling Up Fund, aims to revitalise the region by celebrating its rich heritage and investing in its future.
The Vivian Legacy scheme, one of the beneficiaries of this fund, is set to deliver three geographically defined projects:
Project 1: Regenerating Hafod-Morfa Copperworks - consolidates the industrial legacy of the copper industry on the banks of the River Tawe at the Hafod-Morfa Copperworks site, preserving the rich heritage features including several listed buildings and releasing them for business use, preparing for new private sector investment at scale and increasing connectivity for both local communities and visitors alike and telling the story to new generations.
Project 2: River Tawe Link & The Strand picks up the river linkages and eases the public interface with the core City Centre through imaginative re-use of Victorian railway arches to enable better access to public transport by bus, rail, and river, and continuing the heritage experience that is currently underplayed.
Project 3: Swansea Museum - creates a mutual destination with the heritage corridor in upgrading and enhancing Swansea Museum, the oldest in Wales, enabling a richer display of the history of the place, as well as bringing its collection nearer to the increased exhibition space to release the Copperworks rolling mill for mixed use regeneration and economic benefit.
