Japanese knotweed treatment frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about our treatment service for Japanese knotweed.

What if my house/business is leasehold?
It doesn't matter if your house/business is freehold or leasehold.

What if I'm a tenant?
You should check your tenancy agreement to see who is responsible for the upkeep of the grounds/gardens and who will incur the cost of the treatment. If it is you we advise that you make your landlord aware of the treatment.

What if I live in a council house and there's knotweed in the garden?
You need to report the knotweed to your housing officer.

What if the knotweed is just outside my land but I don't want it spreading onto my land?
If the knotweed is on private land then it's a private matter. If the knotweed is growing on council land then please report it to the nature team.

What happens after the knotweed has been sprayed?
The knotweed should show signs of dying back approximately 14 days after treatment. Symptoms include brown leaves and wilting.

Will my children/pets still be able to play in the garden?
We would recommend that animals and children be kept away from the treated area for 24 hours. However, once the chemical has dried on the plant it is classed as safe (usually rain fast within 1 hour as recommended by the manufacturer).

Are there any health risks with the treatment?
The product we use is not classified as dangerous.

What if the area needing treatment is near my pond?
The product we use is safe for use around waterways. We will also advise on site if necessary.

What happens if nothing happens to the knotweed after it has been sprayed?
We will investigate, check and re-treat if necessary.

How often will it need to be sprayed to be effective?
This is dependent on each site, between a minimum of 1 treatment and up to a 5 year treatment programme. One spray will not eradicate the knotweed but will start to bring it under control. Annual treatment for a number of years will help to control it in the long term and/or bring it to a stage where you could carry on treatment yourself.

If you have any questions which haven't been answered just contact the parks team.
