Castle Square

We're working to improve Castle Square, making it more active, distinctive and vibrant.

A revitalised public space with new uses, your new-look square will be brought in line with the wider programme of regeneration underway in Swansea, making it an attractive city to live, work and visit.

Castle Square will become a modern, functional and well-maintained public space where you'll want to spend quality time and relax.

It'll still accommodate a range of events and cultural experiences.

With plans informed by public opinion and consultation, your more welcoming Castle Square will feature:

  • More useable green space and landscaping - increased from 25% of the square of recent years to more than 40%; there'll be more character, colour and biodiversity.
  • A greater number of trees - with most existing trees retained.
  • New cafes or restaurants in an attractive family-friendly space, with canopies providing shade and shelter for people to sit outside and relax.
  • New fun water jets with mini-fountains rising from the paved area - in place of the water features of recent years.
  • An upgraded pedestrian-friendly paved area which is accessible to all.
  • Lots of space for people to gather, sit out and relax - a pivotal focal point for events and gatherings such as those held there in recent years.

During the work, the plan is for disruption to be kept to a minimum - and for all businesses to remain open and accessible.

Your new-look Castle Square could open towards the end of 2026.
