The 6 hectare reserve is one of the few remaining areas of wetland habitat in the City and County of Swansea. Wetlands are amongst the most threatened natural habitats in the UK. They are being lost to development and through lack of management.

Swansea Vale is home to a large variety of plants and animals, from orchids to otters and many are a priority for conservation. Swansea Vale is a highly diverse site with a mosaic of habitats ranging from swamp to marshy grassland, scrub, semi-improved and unimproved neutral grassland.

Swansea Vale is in close proximity to Llansamlet Marshes, another wetland site of importance to nature conservation.

Swansea Vale Nature Reserve is accessible from Walters Road in Llansamlet. The reserve can be reached from the bike path that starts at the end of Pant-y-Blawd Road linking into the riverside network.

National Cycle Route 43 runs along the riverside just to the west of the reserve.
