Volunteers Week shout out to those who support Swansea Council events and cultural venues

THE unsung heroes who make sure major events are a success or who help out some of our most popular cultural venues are getting their time in the limelight this week

Whether it's helping at one of the many major events that form part of the annual Swansea Council events programme or at one of many council run Cultural venues, the hundreds of volunteers that help make these a success are being recognised this week during Volunteers Week.

Although many venues are currently closed due to the coronavirus pandemic, many volunteers are still supporting the Council's Cultural Services team with a range of projects - one such example is the Library Services' Cambrian Indexing Online Project.

Robert Francis-Davies, Cabinet Member for Investment, Regeneration and Tourism, said - "Cultural Services is a large and diverse service and we rely on hundreds of volunteers. Volunteers Week is an annual celebration which affords organisations such as ours, the opportunity to say thank you for the contribution our volunteers make throughout the year to support our events and venues.

"The volunteers for our events programme support us in a number of ways including stewarding the beach line during the Wales Airshow, helping to manage parking at Singleton Park concerts as well as helping with handing out water to participants at the Admiral Swansea Bay 10k - often in all weathers too.

"Our community buildings are run by volunteers and we are so grateful to the number of Friends Groups who help look after our parks and Oystermouth Castle and the team who help keep Swansea active by volunteering through our Sport and Health team.

"Our venues also have a number of volunteers who, among other duties, include assisting with the guided tours to visitors to Swansea Museum, classes and workshops at Glynn Vivian and supporting the Cambrian Project at our Swansea libraries.

"We even have a volunteer who moved from Swansea to Glasgow at the end of last year to live closer to her family but continues to extract and input information into the Cambrian Indexing Online Project at our Swansea libraries.

"We are extremely grateful to the hundreds of volunteers for their ongoing support and their valued input and who give their time and dedication to help make our events and programmes run smoothly and effectively."

Volunteers' Week is a UK wide and annual festival of volunteering which takes place from 1-7 June every year.  Find out more at https://www.scvs.org.uk/
