Carbon reduction programme underway at leisure facilities

Freedom Leisure is starting an extensive energy improvement scheme at four of the Swansea leisure centres it operates on behalf of the council.

It will make them even more energy efficient and comes as part of £5.1m of improvements across Freedom's seven-site Swansea portfolio.

Energy saving measures have started at The LC and at Morriston, Penlan and Penyrheol leisure centre.

The programme is being carried out in partnership with the council, with the work done by leading energy saving consultants Leisure Energy.

Solar photovoltaic panels have been installed on the roof at the Morriston and Penlan centres. Solar thermal panels have been installed at Penyrheol. Leisure Energy are working on other innovations.

Robert Francis-Davies, the council's cabinet member for investment, regeneration and tourism, said: "We welcome this work. It's good use of part of the £5.1m capital improvements pledge we made to our leisure centre customers; it's good for the environment and good for the sustainability of important local services."
