Swansea 50 celebrations are coming - be part of it

Communities across Swansea are being urged to be part of the city's 50th anniversary events over the coming months.

Local groups, organisations and individuals can hold events, parties and even street parties as part of the Swansea 50 celebrations.

And every show-piece event that's taking place can get a free listing to share the news and encourage participation on a new website set up to be the home of all things Swansea 50.

Robert Francis-Davies, Cabinet Member for investment, regeneration and tourism, said Swansea 50 gives communities a brilliant chance to get together and celebrate everything that's great about their home city.

He said: "Communities are the heart of our city and the heart of the Swansea 50 celebrations. Street parties, school celebrations, community fetes, history walks - Swansea 50 is a wonderful chance for neighbourhoods to get to know one another just that little bit better."

He said the council and other organisations are doing their bit to make the 50th anniversary special. But residents across the city can join in too.

"The news that Swansea was to be named a city was revealed in July, 1969, with the official naming taking place later in the year. We want to make this year very special for all our communities and visitors with a series of high-profile events.

"Our annual Wales Airshow is going to be even more special this year and we have the likes of the Stereophonics returning to celebrate their iconic Swansea gig at Morfa Stadium 20 years ago.

"But schools, community groups, clubs, local pubs and city streets can all make it a year to remember by holding their own local celebrations and events.

"A special Swansea 50 website has been set up and anyone who wants to add an event they're organising just needs to go on the site and upload their news. Event organisers can also download a free Swansea 50 logo to use to promote their celebrations. Being part of it is as simple as that."
