How safe are the Fireworks you buy?

Consumers in Swansea are being urged to buy fireworks from established traders in the city in preparation for this year's bonfire night celebrations

Trading Standards in Swansea are warning against residents being tempted to buy cheap fireworks from unlicensed sources including over social media websites, because of the potential for the products being faulty or poorly manufactured.

Rhys Harries, Swansea Council's Trading Standards Manager, said: "At this time of year, some people are tempted to purchase cheap fireworks and we see lots of evidence of individuals selling them online via social media sites or someone selling them from the back of a van.

"We would advise people against being tempted into buying from these type of sources. The quality of the products can't be guaranteed and in many cases the products are dangerous.

"If you are planning a display at home or with friends then it's wise to buy your fireworks from established businesses where the goods are properly regulated and licensed."

In 2016, Swansea Trading Standards confiscated large quantities of fireworks that were being sold on social media. Officers took action because of the large quantity of fireworks which were discovered being stored in an unsafe manner.

The Council's Community Safety Team is also working with the fire service this year, passing on 'dos and don'ts' for safe firework celebrations.

Mary Sherwood, Swansea Council's Cabinet Member for Better Communities, said: "Bonfire night is a busy night for many different services. We want families to have fun and enjoy the occasion. The Council's organised firework event is a great way for families to enjoy themselves in a safe way.

"If families are planning their own event then it's useful to understand how to make those events safe and fun. The list of dos and don'ts issued by the fire service will ensure our communities are safe on November 5."

Swansea Council's Fireworks Display takes place on November 5 at St Helen's Ground from 5pm.
