Local heroes honoured at Lord Mayor's Summer Ball

Local heroes of screen, stage and sport helped raise thousands of pounds for the Lord Mayor's charities at the Lord Mayor's Summer Honours Ball in Swansea last night.

Rhys Ifans

Twin Town star Rhys Ifans, sports legends Alun Wyn Jones and West End actress Ria Jones all took to the red carpet at the Brangwyn Hall for the event.

The honours ball, held for the second time, sponsored by Trade Centre Wales aims to celebrate the contributions to the life and reputation of our city from all walks of life. The roll of honour last night also featured awards for services to broadcasting, charity, children, entrepreneurship and to the city's brand.

Philip Downing, Lord Mayor of Swansea, said: "It was a brilliant, glittering night. The generosity of contributors was amazing and the amount raised for my charities this year - more than £4,000 on the night - was as incredible as it was humbling."

Cllr Downing said: "Swansea is one of the great British cities. I hope it will demonstrate what we in Swansea already know - that we are world-class achievers with much ambition and lots more to do.

It's thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, Trade Centre Wales, University of Wales Trinity St David and Swansea University, as well as those sponsoring the honours, and not forgetting our attendees we are able to hold this event to showcase the brilliant people that makes Swansea such a great place."
