City parks clean-up in Green Flag Awards

Fourteen of Swansea's best beauty spots have been awarded prestigious Green Flag or Green Flag Community Award status.

Victoria Park

The 2017 winners include Clyne Gardens, Victoria Park and Brymill Park.

The Green Flag Award is an international mark of a quality park or green space.

It is delivered in Wales by Keep Wales Tidy, with support from the Welsh Government, and is judged by green space experts who volunteer their time to visit applicant sites and assess them against criteria including horticultural standards, cleanliness, sustainability and community involvement.

Cllr Robert Francis-Davies, Swansea Council's Cabinet Member for Culture, Tourism and Major Projects, said: "We are very lucky in Swansea to enjoy some fantastic parks and open spaces, many of which are quite literally on our doorsteps.

"There can't be many cities that boast such an array of diverse parks. We have the beauty of Clyne Gardens that attracts visitors from far and wide, the sports facilities and communal feel of Victoria Gardens and Brynmill Park which is enjoyed by so many young families, to name just a few.

"A huge amount of time and effort goes in to maintaining them and the Green Flag Award is recognition for the council's park staff, the many friends groups and other volunteers and organisations for their work."

Green Flags have today been awarded to Victoria Park, Parc Llewelyn, Cwmdonkin Park, Clyne Gardens, Bynmill Park, Singleton Botanical and Ornamental Gardens, Swansea University and Penllergare Valley Woods which is managed by the Penllergare Trust.

Coedbach Park, Crwys Community Woodland, Llys Nini, Polly's Park, St Madoc Centre and Swansea Canal have all been awarded Green Flag Community Awards.

In total, 183 parks and green spaces in Wales have met the high standard needed to receive the coveted Green Flag Award or the Green Flag Community Award.

Lucy Prisk, Green Flag Coordinator, said: "Keep Wales Tidy is proud to run the scheme in Wales because we know having a good quality environment can have a big impact on our communities, health and well-being, and economy.

"I'd like to congratulate all the winners and thank everyone who works tirelessly to maintain the standards demanded by the Green Flag Award. I'd encourage everyone to get outdoors and explore the diverse range of fantastic facilities we have on our doorstep."
