Conservation Task Day

Help protect our beautiful Bishop's Wood Local Nature Reserve! We will be tackling habitat management, removing invasive species, or (depending on the weather and temperatures) continuing with coppicing to support woodland regeneration.
Enjoy the fresh air, learn about local wildlife, and make a real difference.
No experience needed - just bring your enthusiasm.

City Nature Challenge 2025: Swansea is back this spring 25 - 28 April!

City Nature Challenge is an annual four-day global bioblitz-style competition, where cities are in a friendly contest with each other to see who can make the most observations of nature, who can find the most species and who can engage the most people.

This April marks the 10 year anniversary of City Nature Challenge, themed "Bring the Globe Together for Biodiversity". It is the third year that Swansea is taking part in the challenge.
We would like you to join us in discovering and recording wildlife across the whole City and County of Swansea.
You can take part by attending any of 28 organised events and also make your observations using free iNaturalist app - every observation counts!

Free guided walk and overview of LIFEquake peatland restoration project

As part of the City Nature Challenge Swansea, the LIFEquake peatland restoration project are happy to welcome people of any age to enjoy a guided tour of the Crymlyn Bog Nature Reserve. Learn about local history, local nature and the many ways the project is restoring the wetland habitat. We'll be using the iNaturalist App to record any wildlife we spot along the way. A lovely event for all ages.
The event requires people to cover approx. 1.5miles on mostly flat terrain and wooden boardwalk. The site can be wet and muddy in places so wellies or walking boots are recommended. Appropriate outdoor clothing is also strongly recommended.

Adder field training/walk

Celebrate the Year of the Snake with a guided walk through adder habitat at Oxwich Burrows! Mr Matt Cooke will be explaining adder ecology and how to survey for them whilst providing practical survey experience for the species. The event will feature a minimum 60 minutes of walking and requires a reasonable level of physical fitness.

Canal nature walk

Come along and learn more about an array of fascinating bugs - and help record what you see and hear. This will be a gentle, accessible activity with opportunities to explore and ask questions.

Guided bat walk

The evening will start with a small introduction to bats and a demonstration of how to use bat detectors.
We will be using bat detectors to locate and identify any bats in the area. The walk offers an opportunity to learn a bit more about these fantastic and elusive creatures.
Led by Evelyn Gruchala - terrestrial ecologist and active bat group member.

Walk to the worm

Join us on a walk from in front of the National Trust Shop to far end on Worms Head and back. On route we'll delve into the rich history of Rhossili and the wildlife that lives there.
Once you leave the mainland and traverse the causeway, it's a challenging walk with steep inclines, long drops, very rugged terrain. You'll need to scramble up the very last part to reach the top of the outer head (or you can wait at the bottom).
For this reason, it's not recommended for dogs.
We only have a 5 hour window of opportunity to get over to Worms Head, which makes the walk all the more interesting and challenging.
This walk will be led by Kathryn Thomas (Communities and Nature Project Officer, Gower National Landscape)
- Distance: approx. 7km (5 miles)
- Sturdy footwear is essential
- Individuals under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult
- Difficulty level: difficult
- Parking: parking at National Trust car park, fees apply for non-members
- Travel by bus: 118 bus from Swansea to Rhossili
- It's good to take a snack to enjoy on the outer head
