More play facilities launched in Swansea

Children in Swansea are celebrating the opening of two brand new play and sports facilities in the city.

multi use games area

Swansea Council has joined dozens of children in two local communities - Morriston and Blaenymaes, where two new 'multi-use games areas' (MUGA) have been formally opened.

The new purpose-built games areas at Morriston Park and Broughton Ave - Blaenymaes are part of the council's ongoing £7million investment in play areas for children in the city.

The newly opened site at Morriston Park not only features a multi use games area, it also now features Swansea's first Teqball table - which is a curved table, similar to table tennis, but used with a football rather than a bat and ball.

The site at Morriston has previously benefited from an upgrade to the play area as part of an earlier phase of the overall play improvements across Swansea.

Both venues are able to accommodate a wide range of sporting activities including football, basketball, netball and badminton.

Robert Francis Davies, Cabinet Member for Investment, Regeneration and Tourism, said: "We previously signed up to the United Nations Rights of the Child, aiming to ensure all children in Swansea had access to play equipment, wherever they live in the city.

"For the last few years, we have been replacing and upgrading all play equipment at parks and play areas right across Swansea.

"We have invested more than £7million so far to complete this upgrade and ensure every child has access to high quality play equipment in their community.

"When the covid pandemic occurred, it highlighted just how important parks are for our residents and so we have committed to ensuring our parks are a place where families and children want to go and have fun for future generations to come."

Play areas is other parts of the city have also recently been upgraded and formally opened, including a fantastic new venue at Longridge - Mayhill.

Cllr Andrew Stevens, Cabinet Member for Environment and Infrastructure, said the council's network of new and refurbished play areas were having a really positive impact on city communities.

He said: "This initiative demonstrates our commitment to ensuring neighbourhoods in Swansea have access to safe and exciting spaces for outdoor fun.

"Long Ridge has already become a favourite spot for families, bringing people together and providing children with invaluable opportunities to learn and grow through play."
