Essential Swansea Indoor Market services continue through firebreak

Our city's indoor market is set to remain open for essential retail businesses and takeaway café services during the Covid-19 firebreak.

The market will open its doors at its usual times during the firebreak and customers will be able to access stalls selling food and groceries as well as takeaway items from cafés.

At the same time the new toilets will be open to the public.

Robert Francis Davies, Cabinet Member for investment, regeneration and tourism, said the decision to open the market follows discussions with traders. Those able to open will be adhering to Covid-19 mitigation measures already in place, including the two-metre rule and the wearing of facemasks.

He said: "We are continuing to work closely with Market traders to support them all through these challenging times. Food businesses will be able to continue to supply their customers both at the market and through online and delivery services.

"At the same time cafes based at the market will be allowed to trade for takeaway purposes. All of this will be delivered safely with our market staff available to support customers and traders alongside the rigorous spot-cleaning routine we've introduced through the day since the market re-opened.

David Hopkins, Cabinet Member for Delivery and Operations, added: "As a council we recognise the new pressures on Swansea Market traders due to the firebreak, particularly those which can't open.

"Over the last seven months we've supported them with rent subsidies and accessing advice and financial support. In addition, we are investing £439,000 on a range of improvements which include new public toilets which will remain open during the firebreak.

"In addition to that we are in the process of reviewing the trader's rents over the fire-break and also how we can help them access all the Welsh Government and other grants for which they are eligible."
