Local land charges frequently asked questions

Common questions about local land charges.

How do I apply for a search? 
All search results must be applied for by sending an application by email to the local land charges department. Unfortunately, we cannot accept applications by mail.

How do I pay for my search?
Payment should be made by BACS upon receipt of our monthly invoice. Please ensure that our invoice number is stated when the payment is made in order that our finance department can reconcile the payments.

How long will my search take?
We aim to return search results within 10 working days. In an effort to reduce turnaround times we would ask users not to telephone or email to enquire as to when the search will be produced within this period.  

Do you require a plan in order to carry out a search?
Yes, a plan is required for every request. This should be submitted together with official LLC1 and CON29 forms. To avoid your search being delayed, you will need to provide a clear plan defining the boundaries, preferably 1:1250 scale.

Which forms should I use?
LLC1 and CON29 forms should be used. These can be obtained from a solicitor's office, or can be ordered online from a legal stationer such as Oyez. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide forms due to copyright rules.  

Do you reply to drainage enquiries?
No. Please contact Dŵr Cymru/Welsh Water on 01443 331063.

Do you expedite searches?
No, we are unable to expedite searches. We aim to return search results within 10 working days. 

How will I receive my search?
All searches (apart from NLIS) are returned via email.

Where can copy documents be obtained?
Please email details of document(s) to legal.filingandmail@swansea.gov.uk. There is a fee payable, dependent upon the size of the document.  

How to apply for a personal search?
We require 10 working days' notice for personal searches and there is a limit per company/agent of 5 searches per day Monday to Friday (not Saturday or Sunday). The unit reserves the right to review this practice if a large number of searches are received on any one day.    

Requests should be emailed to llc.personalsearch@swansea.gov.uk We do not accept personal searches by post or over the telephone.

Please note that extra notice is required over bank holidays.

The results will be emailed back to you within 10 working days' at the latest.  Please note that you no longer need to visit the Civic Centre as the results will be emailed to you and will not be provided to you in person.

There is no fee for this service.

What information is revealed on a personal search?
A personal search reveals only raw data from the local land charges register and approved planning applications on the planning register. Information from the public registers only should be requested from individual departments.
