Download free eBooks to your computer, tablet and phone with eBooks for Wales.

If you are a member of Swansea Libraries you automatically have access to our eBook service, eBooks for Wales.

If you are not already a member and want to borrow an eBook you can apply to join Swansea Libraries online.

Important information about the eBooks service:

  • Adults can borrow up to 10 eBooks for loan periods from 1 day up to 3 weeks.
  • You won't have to worry about paying any late fees as they will automatically be removed from your device at the end of the loan period.
  • Downloads are available for most eReader devices (but not Kindles).
  • Due to licencing arrangements, eBooks from eBooks for Wales cannot be returned prior to the end of the loan period selected.  It is possible to reserve books which are currently on loan.
  • Adobe Digital Editions software may be needed to read and transfer eBooks.  Please check that your device is compatible before attempting to download any eBooks.  A list of supported devices is available from the Adobe Digital Editions software websiteOpens new window.

 

Borrowing books from eBooks for Wales

You can browse the full eBooks for Wales libraryOpens new window without signing up for an account or logging in. 

  • To use eBooks for Wales you will need to enter your library card number and PIN. This is the same details as you would use to login to the library catalogue. For first time users your PIN is usually your date of birth. If you are having problems speak to your local library.
  • Select browse from the top menu to view their titles by new arrivals, collections and genre.
  • To search for a title you can use the search box in the top right hand corner.
  • To checkout an item you can either select the title and add to basket or hover over the book image and select add. You can also add books you want to read to your wishlist by hovering over the image. These add your items to the basket.
  • To complete the checkout and borrow  the eBook you need to select the shopping trolley icon in the top left and then select checkout in the bottom right corner of the page.
  • After you have borrowed a title, click on the download button. If you get a pop-up with options to Open, Run or Save your loan when you download, make sure that you select Save, otherwise the eBook will not save to your computer properly.
  • After 21 days the eBook will no longer be available to read. You will need to delete the file from your computer or mobile device.
  • If the title you want to borrow says 'reserve' rather than borrow this is because another library user has already borrowed the book. If you still want to borrow the book select reserve. As soon as the eAudiobook becomes available you will be sent an email. You will have ten days to download the book before it becomes available to other users.

The first time you try to download an eBook you will be prompted to download and install Adobe Digital Editions if this software is not already on your PC/Mac. If you are using an Android mobile device or iPhone/ iPad you can download the Libro eReader app.
