Festive hoverboarders to thrill on-lookers at Christmas Parade

An iconic scene from the Back to the Future movie franchise will be given a festive twist when seasonal hoverboarders thrill thousands of on-lookers at this year's Christmas Parade in Swansea.

Christmas hoverboarders

The hoverboarders, whose Christmas outfits will glow in the dark, are one element of the major event, which returns to Swansea on Sunday November 19.

Millions of people across the world fell in love with hoverboards when the concept was first introduced in 1989 movie Back to the Future Two.

Organised by Swansea Council, other entertainment at the parade will include floats taking inspiration from Frozen, Snow White, Cinderella, and Jack and the Beanstalk.

A Mother Christmas dance group, marching bands and giant reindeer, wrapped present and snowman inflatables will also feature.

Cllr Robert Francis-Davies, Swansea Council's Cabinet Member for Culture, Tourism and Major Projects, said: "The return of the Christmas Parade will form part of a bumper weekend of Christmas fun to kick-start our festive celebrations in Swansea, with Waterfront Winterland returning to Museum Green on Friday November 17 and the Christmas Market starting on Oxford Street from Saturday November 18.

"A real Christmas tree will also be introduced at the Kingsway end of Princess Way, which will combine with everything else we're planning to generate a terrific festive atmosphere in the city centre in the build-up to Christmas."

Starting at about 5pm, the Christmas Parade, part of the 'It's Christmas in Swansea' series of events and activities, will travel along Wind Street, High Street, Orchard Street and Kingsway, with Santa switching-on the Christmas lights close to the city centre's Christmas tree. The parade will finish in the area of the Grand Theatre this year.

Work to set up Waterfront Winterland at Museum Park will start at the beginning of November. Ice-skating tickets are now available for the attraction, which will also include a giant wheel and two new rides for 2017.

Cllr Francis-Davies said: "We're confident everything that's being arranged in the run-up to Christmas will meet the aspirations of local people, local businesses and visitors to the city."
