City centre safe space info point to be trialled

A project is being trialled over coming weeks to further support Swansea city centre's reputation as a safe and enjoyable place to spend a night out.

Castle Square

To coincide with the start of the new academic year at the city's universities, a Safe Space Info Point is being piloted at Castle Square.

Running from 10pm to 4am, the info point will be available on Wednesday September 27, Saturday September 30, Wednesday October 4 and Saturday October 7.

The Safe Space will include city centre what's on information and mobile phone charging points. Street pastors will be there to give advice and support to anyone who needs it, whether they've lost their friends, run out of money, mislaid their phone or feel vulnerable in some way.

Led by South Wales Police with support from Swansea Council and Swansea BID (Business Improvement District), Swansea is trialling the scheme with the Home Office as a test project to evaluate its success and possible expansion.

On Saturday, it will coincide with the Swansea Big Weekend, a two-day event that will celebrate Swansea city centre's Purple Flag-winning evening and night-time economy.

Also taking place on Friday, the Big Weekend will include lots of venue-based activities like live pop and rock music, poetry and comedy, as well as street food traders, street dance, stilt walking and fire juggling outdoors.

Cllr Robert Francis-Davies, Swansea Council's Cabinet Member for Culture, Tourism and Major Projects, said: "It makes sense to trial the Safe Space Info Point over coming weeks because it's the start of the new academic year at the city's universities, with major events like the Swansea Big Weekend also being held.

"Partnership work with South Wales Police, Swansea BID and many organisations led to the city centre retaining prestigious Purple Flag status earlier this year, so this latest pilot project will be a further boost for an evening and night-time experience that's already being recognised as fun, safe and diverse.

"While the Swansea Big Weekend is a celebration of Swansea city centre's vibrant evening and night-time economy, the Safe Space Info Point is an example of work that's continually on-going to keep on improving the visitor experience there."

Starting at 4pm on each day, the Swansea Big Weekend will also include a showing of Grease on Castle Square's Big Screen with live interactive performances and characters bringing the film to life. Creative Bubble will be on hand with a summer stage, with money-off promotions for Big Heart of Swansea Loyalty Card holders available from a range of businesses.
