Tributes paid to former Lord Mayor, Mair Gibbs

Tributes are being paid to former Lord Mayor of Swansea, Mair Gibbs, who has died at the age of 85.

Mair Gibbs

Former Cllr Gibbs, who was Lord Mayor in 2005/06, and later became an Honourary Alderman, represented the Bonymaen Ward on the former Swansea City Council and the successor authority, City and County of Swansea, from 1986 until she stepped down in 2012.

Rob Stewart, Leader of the Council, said: "My thoughts and condolences are very much with Mair's family at this sad and difficult time.

"I know I speak for all those at Swansea Council who knew her - officers and councillors alike - when I say Mair was a familiar and much-loved face around the council. She served with enthusiasm and distinction for many years.

"Mair was immersed in her local community. She was proud to be from Bonymaen and served the community with a determination and passion. A relentless advocate for its people and their achievements, she acted as a governor for Pentrechwyth Primary School and as Chair of Governors at Cefn Hengoed Community School.

"Her long association with Cefn Hengoed began in 1971 with the newly formed PTA, progressing to the key role of Chair over 20 years ago. Her commitment to the school was immeasurable and her pride in its continued success, immense."

She was a life long member of Mt Zion church along with her siblings: her parents being founder members. Additionally she supported Bonymaen RFC for whom her son and son in law both played.

Her true sporting interests lay however with the Swans, where she recently re-purchased her season ticket. Accompanied by her children and grandchildren she loved the team that she had supported with her late husband Geoff, since the 1950's.

Her enthusiasm for sport was obvious in the continued support for her children and grandchildren in their sporting successes always attending their matches whenever possible.

Mair's son Mark said she was a lively, bubbly and popular personality with a strong moral compass, she will be greatly missed by friends and family alike. A devoted mother and grandmother, she leaves behind Mark and daughter Karen and their spouses Debbie and Tony and her beloved grandchildren Nia, Jamie, Evan and Lewi. Mair achieved much in her life and made a difference.

Former Cllr Gibbs was named an Honourary Alderman of Swansea in 2012, shortly after stepping down as a councillor after more than 25 years' service. The title of Alderman is normally conferred on those former councillors who have provided eminent service to their communities and who have also served as a Lord Mayor or Chair of the Council.
