Countdown to local government elections begins in SwanseaTHE countdown to the local government elections is officially on. ![]() The notices of election for the May 3 polls have now been published. This means that people can be nominated from March 28 for election for one of the 72 seats on Swansea Council and the 282 seats on the Community/Town Councils within the area. The deadline for nominations is noon on Wednesday April 4. It also means people have less than three weeks to register to vote in this election for their choice of councillor to represent the area they live in. The deadline to be registered for these elections is Wednesday April 18. And there is also less than three weeks to opt to vote in the elections by post. Registered voters who find it difficult to get to a polling station on election day, who are away on holiday on May 3, or those who simply wish to vote in the comfort of their own home need to get their completed postal vote application form in by 5pm on Wednesday April 18. Kyle Davies, Swansea Council's Electoral Services Team Leader, said: "There is still time to register and make sure you have a say in the local government elections by post if you wish if you take steps now. "Our Electoral Services team will do all they can in the coming weeks to make sure that people can get their chance to vote." Residents will be able to vote in local government elections if they have registered to vote and are a British or Commonwealth citizen or a citizen of a European Union country living in the UK. Local councils are responsible for a whole range of services including waste, recycling and environmental services, schools, social services, planning, housing, libraries, transport, leisure facilities and many more. Councillors help determine the way these services are provided, funded and prioritised.
