Thousands of households offered benefits help
THOUSANDS of residents are being urged to find out whether they're entitled to Housing and Council Tax Benefit.
Swansea Council has included leaflets about benefit within the 110,000 Council Tax Bills that have been sent out this week.
Already this financial year Swansea Council's Benefit Take Up Team has helped 1,300 people claim more than £580,000 in benefits they wouldn't otherwise have realised they were entitled to.
And Paula Lewis, Benefit Take up manager for Swansea Council, said she hoped even more people would start the ball rolling when they get the information with their bills.
Housing and Council Tax benefit is paid for by central government so claiming does not affect the funding going to the council for services.
She said: "If people are in doubt about whether or not they're entitled to Housing or Council Tax Benefit, they should call and ask. It's that simple.
"Thousands of people in Swansea have already taken advantage of the dedicated telephone line to the Benefits Take Up team for a calculation to see if they are entitled to Council Tax Benefit or Housing Benefit.
"But we know that there are many thousands more people who don't claim benefits they're entitled to.
"We are reaching out to all householders to keep the numbers missing out in Swansea to a minimum."
Stuart Rice, Cabinet Member for Finance, said: "Council tax makes an important contribution to paying for the vital services we all need such as education, bin collections, social services and maintaining our streets and communities.
"The freeze on Council Tax set by Swansea Council will help families at a time when household bills are increasing and their income may be reducing.
"However I also urge people to contact the Take up Team on 01792 635885 to have a calculation for their particular circumstances so they do not miss out on any extra help which is rightfully theirs."
Anyone wanting information or help to see if they can claim Council Tax benefit to reduce their bills can contact the take-up team on 01792 635885.
