A SWANSEA school at the heart of its community for more than 135 years is celebrating a good Estyn Inspection report which found many strengths. In a report published this week Crwys Primary School, Three Crosses, was found to be a place where team work between parents, pupils, staff, governors and the community is helping pupils achieve. Strong features of the school include teachers being particularly skilled at asking open and probing questions that challenge pupils to think. Parents make sure their children attend and are on time for school and teachers keep parents informed so they can support their child's education. Effective partnerships with the local community range from school performances in the local chapel and in other local venues as well as links with community sports clubs. The school engages with local businesses and other organisations to bring learning to life for pupils. Inspector Dr David Gareth Evans said: "Liaison with parents is a particularly strong feature of the school's work. Pupils' learning experiences are enriched by very effective partnerships with the local community. "On occasions the quality of teaching is excellent (this means "sector leading" in Estyn terms) and the planning of activities to develop pupils' skills is exemplary. "The headteacher, governors and leadership team have been successful in developing a shared vision for the school based on high expectations of pupils achievement and behaviour and high levels of care and support." Lyndon Evans, Chair of Governors, said: "It is a true team effort at Crwys and Estyn recognised the contribution made by all stakeholders. "This is an excellent result which the school fully deserves and congratulations must go to everyone involved. It is no surprise that we were found to have a happy and safe school where respect and good behaviour are always evident. "We have strong management and a professional team of teachers and assistants working with the pupils to consistently turn in results above the local and national norms." Head teacher Phil Withey said: "The wording of the report reflects the commitment and pride that everyone associated with the school feels. I am delighted for all concerned. We are, of course, committed to continuous improvement and look forward to building on what we have already achieved." Mike Day, Swansea Council Cabinet member for Education, said: "I am delighted that the work of everyone involved with Crwys, which is having a positive impact on pupil's progress, has been recognised by inspectors."
